Always Learning – If and when to neuter and spay

This week, I listened to a brilliant podcast all about neutering. Hosted by We Love Dogs, Cheryl interviewed licensed vet, Sophie Bell, from Animal Love Pet First Aid. I’ve studied some of Sophie’s courses before, so it served as a good refresher.
Did you know that there is no medical benefit to castration before 5 years? For bitches, spaying may be better to do after 4 months, not 3 months as vets used to previously suggest?
If you do decide to neuter, it’s good to wait until after puberty, when their growth plates have fully closed. This is usually 1 or 2 years depending on size.
The women also discussed behavioural changes following neutering (not always good as was traditionally thought!), chemical castration, and why every entire bitch has a phantom pregnancy. It’s well worth a listen if you get chance.
If you’d like to find out more about the topic, Sophie has produced two brilliant webinars on her website: “Keep your eye on the balls” and “Understanding The Unneutered Female”.
